Lofton's Draft Stock Rising

Pro Football Weekly has moved Curtis Lofton ahead of Dan Conner in their top 5 linebackers column. At this point, it looks like--unless we move down on draft day--Lofton is probably out of reach. If you want to see some film on Lofton, visit my March column, "Manning the Middle."

Speaking of Lofton's Draft Stock Rising, below is the breakdown of my optimal 2008 Broncos Draft.
-First Round Trade #12 for #16 Arizona (etc.) and 3 Round

1) Chris Williams – OT Vanderbilt
2) Curtis Lofton – MLB Oklahoma
3) Earl Bennett – WR Vanderbilt
4) Red Bryant – DT Texas A&M
4) Jordon Dizon – OLB Colorado
5) Jacob Hester – FB/RB LSU
5) Frank Okam – DT Texas
6) Chad Rinehart – OG Northern Iowa
7) Corey Lynch – FS App State
7) Pierre Garcon – WR Mount Union

I feel that we need to build our team around our best player, Cutler, and that means drafting a top rated OT early. Also by selecting Bennett, Hester, and hopefully Garcon we would provide Jay with a few more weapons. Make Niko earn the MLB spot by drafting Lofton and push the other linebackers/ add depth by drafting Dizon. By getting Bryant and Okam we fill the void for 2 big time run stuffing DT. The focus should be put on high character, smart hard working players that can contribute to the overall team. This would almost immediately improve our overall special teams play. Let me know your thoughts.

Lofton and Bryant would occupy the exact same positions on my optimal draft list. I like both those picks. I talk about why I don't like the Williams pick here and why I don't like the Earl Bennett pick here. If we draft a receiver, I want to grab a guy with return skills.

Okam is an underachiever. In this article, I argued that Nick Hayden, Letroy Guion, and Athyba Rubin are all better picks. I emphatically agree that we need to grab a pair of gap defenders in the draft.

Rinehart I love. He can probably play tackle or guard and is a good fit in our scheme.

Overall, I think you've got a great mock draft. Thanks for commenting.
