Robertson Deal Appears Imminent

Scouts.com is reporting that the Broncos and Jets have nearly completed a deal that would send defensive tackle Dwayne Robertson to Denver. According to an anonymous source, Denver will reportedly give up two of its five draft picks between rounds 4 and 6 to complete the deal.

Two picks? This makes me cringe. There's no question Denver needs immediate help along the defensive line but I think there are better options available with those picks. Between Robertson's bad knees and his failure to develop into the kind of talent his 4th-overall draft selection portended, this seems like a hefty fee.

Let's hope both picks are from day 2 of the draft.

Given that information comes JetInsider.com, I think there is a bit of wishful thinking around the draft compensation. Personally the very most I would give the Jets is one of our 5th round picks. Why in hell would we give up 2 mid round picks for a DT that has failed 2 physicals? Especially when the Jets would cut him regardless to save cap space. I support Shanny, at least until the draft results are in, but if he gives up a 4th or 2 5ths then he needs to give up the FULL personnel responsibilities. Ahhh the thought of this is infuriating.

I sure hope you're right. Its actually from "Patriots Insider," which doesn't support your position as well. Nonetheless, I think you are right to point out that this ain't exactly Broncos.com making these lofty claims. Good insight.

Didn't Green Bay want more for Javon when that trade was discussed? Shanahan/Sundquist patiently waited until they could pluck him away for only one pick during the draft. Wouldn't be surprised if the same strategy occurs here. On the other hand, the Broncos have over 80 players in camp as it is, who is going to get cut to make room for draft picks? Sounds like the Broncos would benefit from dumping a couple of draft picks... there just isn't any room left.

That's also a great point. Although, I still want to get fair market value for the picks we're giving away. There's four guys that probably aren't NFL talents at defensive tackle right now. Lynch makes our safety situation really sticky. If we draft a safety, are we going to carry 5 guys?

Also, if we want to fill out at RB are we going to carry Hall, Young, Henry, and Bell?

The roster problems we have are because we're loaded on players and short on talent.

Great comment, I hadn't given that much thought.

And on top of all these draft picks, what about undrafted free agents? Shanny typically likes to sign a few of them too (Mike Bell, Rod Smith). According to John Clayton (ESPN), the Broncos currently have 88 players on the roster... 8 more than the maximum allowed (80). Sure seems like the owners hurt teams by not increasing the player roster in the wake of the exemption for the now defunct NFL Europe. As a result, the Broncos are going to face some difficult roster decisions before training camp even starts. Everyone keeps lauding the fact that the Broncos have all these picks, but where are these picks going to fit? Don't be surprised if the Broncos trade picks away and do not draft as many players as we all think.

There are 11 guys I see on our roster right now that likely fail to make our roster. Even when you trim down to 77 players, you still have to find 6 players to cut. I think there will be some unexpected cuts. Alvin McKinney, Mike Bell, Marland McCree (yes, we just signed him), Abdullah, and Ramsey are all unexpecteds I could see getting cut.

My mistake I ment JetConfidenial.com. It says at the top of the website "This story originally published on JetsConfidential.com"
